Indroducting Arcadia
The full-scale Arcadia was created in 2010 from stack-laminated mahogany. It was first exhibited at Barry Friedman in New York in Wendell Castle: Rockin’. The work reflects Castle’s ability to transform furniture into sculpture while maintaining a direct relationship to the body, material, and use.
Arcadia is also the first work selected for Wendell Castle Editions, a new series of authorized 1:6 scale collector’s pieces. Each miniature is being made at Wendell Castle Workshop, located in Wendell’s former studio in Scottsville, New York. This edition allows collectors to experience Castle’s form at an intimate scale and supports the Project’s work to preserve, interpret, and extend his creative legacy.
Pre-orders for the Arcadia 1:6 scale Collector’s Edition can be made through Friedman Benda Gallery in New York, New York. All proceeds go to Wendell Castle Project.

Background:
Each edition begins with a three-dimensional scan of the original work. The digital model is scaled and carefully evaluated to retain the form, proportions, and character of Castle’s design. When an original work was made using stack-laminated construction, its Collector’s Edition will also be stack laminated.
The editions are fabricated at Wendell Castle Workshop, located in the Scottsville, New York, studio where Castle worked for more than 50 years. They offer collectors, museums, scholars, and admirers of Castle’s work an opportunity to experience important designs at an intimate scale.

How the editions are created
The Original: Each edition begins with a significant Wendell Castle design selected for its artistic importance and suitability for reproduction at 1:6 scale.
The Scan: The original work is three-dimensionally scanned to create a detailed digital record of its form and proportions.
The Construction: The scaled edition is developed with careful attention to the materials and construction of the original. When the original work was stack laminated, the Collector’s Edition is also produced using stack-laminated construction.
The Workshop: The editions are fabricated at Wendell Castle Workshop in the studio where Castle worked for more than 50 years. Arcadia is made from stack-laminated mahogany, preserving both the material and the defining construction method of the original work.
